Frequently asked questions
How often should a fire alarm be serviced?
Servicing frequency depends on the system, the building and its use. Intervals are set with reference to the applicable BS 5839 recommendations and the arrangements agreed for the premises. For most commercial systems that means a periodic inspection and service at least every six months, alongside the weekly user test carried out by the premises.
What does fire alarm servicing include?
Within the agreed scope: the control panel and its recorded faults, a functional test of detectors, call points and sounders, a check of the standby batteries and power supply, and an update to the system log book with the findings.
What happens if faults are identified?
Faults are recorded in the service report and explained to you, with the recommended remedial works and their priority. Minor issues can often be dealt with on the day; anything larger is quoted separately.
Can you service a system installed by another company?
Usually, yes. Most conventional and addressable systems can be serviced by a competent engineer. Some proprietary systems need manufacturer access codes or software, and we will tell you before the visit if that applies.
Do you install new fire alarm systems?
Yes. A new system is designed to the category the building needs, which usually follows from the fire risk assessment, then installed, commissioned and handed over with the documentation.
What records will we hold after a visit?
A service report and an updated log book entry recording the work done, faults found and any recommendations. Keep these with your fire-safety records; your fire risk assessor will ask to see them.
