Frequently asked questions
What is an AOV?
An automatic opening vent is a vent (commonly a window, louvre or roof unit) that opens to release smoke from a stairway, lobby or corridor, so the escape route stays usable and firefighters can work in the building.
How often should an AOV system be serviced?
Smoke-control systems need regular routine testing by the building’s management and periodic servicing by a competent engineer, normally at least once a year. The interval is set with reference to the manufacturer’s guidance and the relevant British Standards for the installed system.
What does an AOV service include?
A check of the vents, actuators, control panel, manual and firefighter controls, interfaces with the fire alarm and the standby power supply, followed by a functional test of the system and a written record of the results.
How is an AOV system activated?
Usually by smoke detection in the stair or lobby, through the fire alarm, and by a manual or firefighter override switch. The test confirms each activation route the system is designed to use.
What happens if the system fails a functional test?
The fault is recorded with the likely cause and the recommended remedial action. Because a failed vent can affect the escape route, we flag it straight away so you can decide on interim measures and repairs.
Do you need access to the roof or the head of the stair?
Usually, yes: most vents sit at the head of the stair or on the roof. We confirm access requirements, including any roof access equipment, before the visit.
